If you read my last post on water, you’ll know how important it is to have clean, filtered water…but what about the water bottles that we are drinking it from?
Most soft drinks that we buy come in plastic bottles or cans which has huge environmental issues (more on that below) and also human health issues. Plastic and cans (which have a plastic inner lining) contain BPA. BPA is linked to neurological issues, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and cancers – specifically breast cancer. BPA has finally been banned in the UK but in many cases has been replaced with BPS which is thought to be equally as harmful.
At Home, in the Gym, on the Go
You’ve (hopefully) installed a water filter at home but then you’re putting it into a plastic water bottle? Or a plastic jug? Noooooo! Please stop! Use glass or stainless steel!
Environmental Impact
Plastic is not only toxic to us as humans but to animals, fish and the environment. According to a report from Reuters in 2019, around the world, almost 1 million plastic bottles are purchased every minute. Some 390 million tonnes of plastic were produced worldwide in 2021, data from the Plastics Europe plastics producer association show, up from 1.7 million tonnes in 1950. Although the recycling rate has increased in the last few years, less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled worldwide. In additions, the production of plastic bottles uses large amounts of fossil fuels and water. Bottom line – take your water with you in your glass/stainless steel bottle!
Glass and stainless steel containers are better than plastic for several reasons:
- Non-Toxic: They are free from harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates, which can leach from plastic.
- Environmentally Friendly: Glass is 100% recyclable and can be reused indefinitely without losing quality, reducing waste. Stainless steel is recyclable, reducing waste and environmental impact.
- Preserves Taste: They don’t absorb odours or flavours, keeping water and beverages fresh.
- Durability: Though breakable, glass maintains its integrity longer than plastic and doesn’t degrade over time. Stainless steel is very sturdy too!
- Sustainability: Producing glass has a lower long-term environmental impact than plastic.
I have to admit, carrying my 1 litre glass water bottle around can be a bit of a workout! Not only that but people do laugh at me! But i know it’s better for me, saves me money and makes me drink more so who’s laughing now?! 🙂
I’m a fan of Bkr (glass) but I also love what One Green Bottle (stainless steel) are doing.
